Disability Equality Scheme

Background

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 amended by the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 places a statutory General Duty on all public authorities to promote disability equality. This means that public authorities must, in carrying out all functions, have due regard to the need to:

  • Promote equal opportunities
  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination
  • Eliminate disability related harassment
  • Promote positive attitudes towards people with disabilities
  • Encourage participation by people with disabilities in public life
  • Promote positive attitudes towards people with disabilities
  • Encourage participation by people with disabilities in public life
  • Give due regard to the need to take account of a persons' disabilities, even when that involves treating people more favourably than other people.

Clackmannanshire Council recognises that promoting equality will improve public services for everyone. Our aim is to ensure that equality of opportunity is central to the way the Council works by putting this at the centre of all decision and policy making, service delivery, regulation and enforcement and employment practice.
